Metamorphoses: A Theatrical Revival of Ancient Myths

A Unique Theatrical Experience

Metamorphoses Presented by Rollins in partnership with the William Daniel Mills Theatre Company

Metamorphoses: A Theatrical Revival of Ancient Myths

The world of theatre constantly evolves much like the tales that have been passed down through generations. In a magnificent blend of old and new, Rollins in partnership with the William Daniel Mills Theatre Company, is set to present a theatrical masterpiece, Metamorphoses, inspired by the legendary poem in 15 books, by the Roman poet Ovid. Originally directed by Mary Zimmerman, who penned and produced an early adaptation called Six Myths in 1996, Zimmerman’s finished work, Metamorphoses, which she called a “poetic bridge between myth and modernism,” was produced in 1998. Rollins is proud to present directors Nick Bazo and Thomas Ouellette, who will direct a modern production that promises to be a mesmerizing experience for audiences of all ages.

A Dive into Ancient Greek and Roman Myths

Ovid’s myths, originating from the realms of ancient Greece and Rome, have captivated audiences for millennia. They have woven stories of love, tragedy, hope, and transformation, holding a mirror to humanity’s strengths, weaknesses, and indomitable spirit. Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses reinvigorates these timeless tales, offering a fresh perspective while preserving their ancient heartbeats.

A Unique Theatrical Experience

Metamorphoses stands apart, not just in its story but in its staging. Breaking away from conventional theatre, the play is performed in and around a large onstage water pool. This unique element adds layers of depth, emotion, and symbolism to the stories, as water often represents change, rebirth, and the fluid nature of life.

Audiences will find themselves seated on three sides of this pool, drawing them closer to the performance, making them feel more immersed and connected. This arrangement blurs the lines between the stage and the spectators, enveloping everyone in the shared magic of storytelling.

The Venue: Sally K. Albrecht Studio Theatre, Tiedtke Theatre and Dance Centre

The play’s choice of venue is equally noteworthy. Metamorphoses will be the very first production to grace the stage of the Sally K. Albrecht Studio Theatre, nestled within the brand-new Tiedtke Theatre and Dance Centre. It is a momentous occasion, marking the beginning of countless stories that will be told, sung, and danced in this space.

The modern, state-of-the-art design of the Sally K. Albrecht Studio Theatre, coupled with the intimacy of its settings, makes it the perfect canvas for Metamorphoses. Here, every splash of water, every sigh of the actors, and every gasp of the audience will echo and amplify, creating a symphony of emotions.

The Creative Minds Behind the Curtain

Driving this production are the visionary directors, Nick Bazo and Thomas Ouellette. Their combined expertise, passion, and dedication bring Ovid’s myths to life in ways one could only dream of. While Mary Zimmerman laid down the path with her transformative adaptation, Bazo and Ouellette have taken the baton, directing the performance with a finesse that promises to be both evocative and memorable.

“I am extremely honored to work with our apprentices on this spectacular show and the fact that I get to do it at my alma mater is an icing on the cake.”

~Nick Bazo

Why Metamorphoses Matters Today

At its core, Metamorphoses is about change – the ever-evolving nature of life and human experience. In today’s rapidly shifting world, these tales resonate more than ever. They remind us of our roots, our shared histories, and the timeless lessons that have been handed down from generation to generation.

As audiences watch gods, mortals, and mythical creatures navigate love, loss, and transformation, they will undoubtedly see reflections of their struggles, dreams, and aspirations. Perhaps, as they leave the theatre, they will be inspired to embrace the metamorphoses in their own lives, finding beauty and strength in change.
